Maya warriors stand firm on the front lines, defending their land, their water, their lives… …against a monster that arrived with deceit and now devours everything.
“It’s not the REBELS who create the world’s problems; it’s the world’s problems that create the REBELS.”
“The Monster is an audiovisual investigation that links animal exploitation, violence against the Maya people, and government corruption.”
“The Monster” is a documentary by Liberum, directed and produced by Gustavo Olvera, Director of Creativity and Communication at Liberum. With a background in film and audiovisual production, and supported by an expert production team, over the past four years we have dedicated ourselves to documenting the Maya people’s struggle against the mega pig farms that have been established in their territory.
THEY POLLUTE THE WATER, THE AIR AND THE LAND
MILLIONSOF PIGS ARE CRUELLY EXPLOITED
THEY CRIMINALIZE THE PEOPLE WHO FIGHT FOR THEIR LIVES
4 YEARS OF FILMING IN YUCATÁN
KEKÉN is the name of this monster
These farms cause the death of more than two million pigs each year, and their production system pollutes the water, the air, and the sacred land of the indigenous peoples.
Where are we now?
This documentary reveals the hidden side of the industrial mega farms in Yucatán, Mexico: how they affect local communities, destroy their environment, and perpetuate animal abuse. Through testimonies, never-before-seen footage, and an ethical perspective, we aim not only to tell this story but also to support the indigenous peoples’ call for justice and amplify a voice that has been silenced by corruption.
We have already filmed in affected communities, documenting testimonies from locals, Maya leaders, former farm workers, and capturing striking footage that shows both the cruelty toward animals and the harsh working conditions. We also have evidence of water contamination, which daily deteriorates the health and future of these communities.
This TEASER is just a small sample of the material gathered.
THIS FIGHT IS FOR LIFE!
THIS MONSTER DOESN’T WALK ALONE!
We have managed to document the faces of the victims: the animals, the people, the water, and the land. But we still need to delve into the heart of the Monster: How does it work? Why does it continue operating despite the obvious damage it causes? Who is involved, who protects it, and who benefits?
This documentary not only seeks to highlight a serious problem of territorial violence, oppression, environmental destruction, and animal exploitation, but also aims to become a tool in service of the Maya peoples, who today lack the means to tell their own story.
Our goal is clear: to achieve the complete shutdown of the mega farms in Yucatán and for this project to become a starting point for the rest of Mexico, so that these communities are not alone, and so that Mexico and the world join their cause.
